Central College Nottingham is a Further Education college running courses for 16+ and part-time courses for adults and local business, with some 4000 full-time and 20,000 part-time students. The College currently operates on 11 sites across the City (Nottingham) with main centres in Clifton, Ruddington, City Centre, Beeston and West Bridgford.
Beeston Centre houses a diverse range of facilities from a commercial salon with 40 hairdressing stations & 32 beauty treatment beds, to construction workshops, Business & IT and Digital Technologies. The Centre is also the base for the College’s large International provision.
Central College has a clear vision of how it wants to conduct itself over the next five years, as set out by its STEM Manifesto. A key pillar of this plan is sustainability and energy efficiency. Consequently, Chris Stickley, Facilities Manager for the college is faced with some challenging targets; “We have gone through the carbon trust carbon management programme, we have set a 40% target on carbon reduction which equates to about 1800 tonnes of carbon each year.”

Once Chris had backing to go forward, powerPerfector’s skilled project management team was able to assist in a swift implementation which meant the benefits of voltage optimisation could start be delivered as quickly as possible. “The planning stage with powerPerfector is extremely detailed which makes installation quick and easy. There were two days’ preparation getting the unit in place and 45 minutes of power outage before the power was put back on and the unit working.”
In support of the project management team, powerPerfector’s technical engineers were always on hand to ensure there were no technical issues and their expertise meant any potential issue were resolved before it became a problem.
The installation resulted in 11.5% savings and contribution of 41.5 tonnes of CO2 toward the colleges carbon targets. As a result, the College is evaluating several other voltage optimisation projects at its other locations.
