Harmonics

Harmonics are current and voltage waveforms that are at a higher frequency than the 50Hz main supply. They occur at multiples of this ‘fundamental’ frequency, and, though undesirable, are present in all power supplies. If the level of harmonics (so-called ‘Total Harmonic Distortion’, or THD) reaches high levels, damage can be caused to sensitive electronic equipment, and the efficiency of the high-voltage transformer is reduced considerably.

Harmonics are generally caused by ‘non-linear’ loads, which include many common types of power supply for computer equipment, as well as many transformers. ‘Triplen’ harmonics result when phase voltages are not balanced in a three-phase system, and tend to accumulate in the neutral, causing wasteful currents to flow. To allow electrical loads to run efficiently, it is important to attenuate harmonics at the supply, or prevent them from being generated.
