Overview
Collaborating with powerPerfector saw Nairn’s make a total annual saving of 146,828kWh. Savings were estimated at 4% (Butlerfield site) and 6% (at Peffermill site) whilst the ROI was calculated at 40% across the two sites.
Founded in Lanarkshire in 1896, Nairn’s is the largest producer of oatcakes in the UK. Their oatcakes and biscuits, which are produced in two Edinburgh bakeries, are exported to over thirty countries and they are one of the UK’s leading gluten-free brands.
As part of their energy-reduction commitment, the company had upgraded
all lights to LEDs, installed a more efficient condensing boiler, and installed solar PV.
Our solution
powerPerfector VPO® (Voltage Power Optimiser) units were installed at Nairn’s two production sites in the final quarter of 2022.
A pP280kVA VPO® set to 6% optimisation was installed in series with the main incoming supply at the Nairn’s Butlerfield site. A pP440kVA VPO®️ set to 9% optimisation was installed in series with the main incoming supply at the Nairn’s Peffermill site.
Our experienced PRINCE2-qualified project management team coordinated the installation which was carried out by our approved installers.
Installation
The powerPerfector VPO®️ units were installed at both sites outside normal working hours to minimise disruption to the food production processes.
The results
Half-hourly consumption data was analysed utilising our unique software that incorporates the foundations of the International Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) with both sites showing higher-than-predicted overall savings.
Butlerfield’s savings were 4.7% (an increase on the 4% prediction) whilst Peffermill saw a 7% saving (6% savings had been predicted).
The Butlerfield site offered a 31% ROI, with a payback term of 39 months, whilst the Peffermill site’s payback period was 24 months, giving an ROI of 50%.
In financial terms, the Butlerfield site saw an annual saving of £6,134 and the Peffermill bakery saved £15,891 annually.
